In my paintings I use objects as
symbols to create a world of my own. When I begin a painting I don't
know beforehand what I am attempting to express or reveal in the
world that I create. Each painting is a new visual experience that
unfolds in the process of making the painting.
As a starting point, I choose
objects and images that I consider to be important. They serve as
links to my psyche and as vehicles for communication. Objects have a
way of making the intangible moments and thoughts of my life
tangible. They serve as stand-ins for memories, associations, and
emotions. Through reification and the remembrance that follows, my
sense of reality is confirmed and my understanding of self is
strengthened. In the current work, the objects are from the natural
world. Broadly speaking, they symbolize beauty, order, complexity,
and cycles of life and death. I use botanical subject matter that I
find in my yard, neighborhood, and community. The fact that these
objects are from my external environment is important; it creates
another link between my inner and outer world.
The images that I use in my
paintings are botanical or natural history illustrations and
patterns. They also symbolize
beauty, order, and complexity, but as seen through the minds of
others. I appropriate these images for aesthetic reasons. Their
beauty is an affirmation of my psyche and its link to others of a
similar mind. The correspondence between the symbolism of these
natural objects and that of the appropriated images creates the
context of my paintings. It is a dynamic visual situation in which a
dialog develops when one thing is compared to another. To further
enrich the dialog I juxtapose elements in unexpected ways and
contain them within an ambiguous pictorial space. This space is
ethereal and creates emptiness around the objects of the paintings.
By emptiness I mean lack of form or illusion of depth. However the
color and light making up this space have a presence that reinforces
the symbolic content of the painting. This presence creates an
environment for the symbolic forms in which all elements are
interconnected.
What I want to accomplish for the
viewer, and why I create this world of my own in painting, is to
establish a link between my consciousness and that of others. This
connection is made up of symbols and results in an aesthetic
experience in which the viewer is an active participant.
