Artist Statement and Resume

Painting is my way of celebrating and expressing my feelings of connection to the natural world.  As a long time gardener and keeper of bees I continually witness nature’s beauty and regenerative forces.  Within my garden small universes come alive and wither only to be reborn again.  I see my paintings as metaphors for my feelings about the magic and beauty that surrounds me from a simple flower or leaf to the colors a beautiful western sunset.  I believe in beauty.  The beautiful is not superficial but rather describes something that has the ability to open our senses to sensations and feelings long held or forgotten. A painting also has this ability to open our senses and is a wonderful means of expressing universal connections and truths.

My process is quite intuitive and I love working and playing with color saturated oil paints and luscious bees wax from my hives. I mix the wax and oil paint together then brayer on to a panel many layers of color until a luminosity is achieved and the image starts to be revealed.  I try to avoid thinking too much and allow the process to expose the painting.  It is important for me to stay present with the work and let the painting lead me.  I continually struggle to let go of the precious and the expected.  The unexpected accidents and impulses always lead me to new places and discoveries.

It has been said illusion is the scent of something real coming close.  Painting has the ability to make visible the real and to remind us of what has been misplaced and forgotten.  It is my hope my paintings hint at, or perhaps reveal a bit of truth about our connection to each other and our natural world.
