As a child I wandered the hills behind our home in Southern
California, exploring and discovering everything from plants to
pollywogs. I had few playmates so the land became my partner and my
friend. I frequently hid from my too busy household in little caves
or overgrown spots – or at the top of an old, large avocado tree –
surveying all that lay around me.
Today I paint my landscapes with the same sense of peace and freedom
and fascination that I felt as a child when wandering “my” hills.
There might be a feeling of serenity or even isolation in my
secluded environments, but my colors are warm, my vistas long, and
all that I survey is friendly, with perhaps a little mystery thrown
in. At the same time, I do not want to reveal everything about the
image. I want for the viewer to reach in and finish the unknowns;
where does that path lead, who are those people, what lies beyond -
unsaid?
I usually paint with oils or pastels because I love the buttery feel
of the oils sliding onto a canvas and the way I can paint thinly,
like in skies or distant mountains, or thickly like trees or
grasses. The pastels have an immediacy about them as I grasp the
pastel sticks with my fingers and make my marks and create my
visions – and the colors of both are absolutely yummy and great fun
to work with. And, as Francis Bacon said, “ Painting gave meaning to
my life, which without it it would not have had.”
