In this series of works, I use the images of passageways such as doors, windows, ladders, and even keyholes, to evoke the transitions, journeys, and secrets in life. The empty spaces defined by these passageways represent different “places” or “moments in time.”

Copper is the medium that I prefer to work in as it changes texture and color dramatically with time and/or the creative process. In most of these pieces, the evidence of the processes involved in their creation is left intact, no polishing or grinding down of the surfaces or solder or gouges in the metal. They remain raw. The pieces are also initially torched - not just to facilitate bending the metal or bringing out the various colors – but also to signify passage by fire. Some pieces do have parts that have been polished. This is in keeping with the themes of change, progress and refinement, chaos and order.

Most work is cut from one flat sheet of metal in order to “pull out” one something from one nothing. The pieces tell different stories depending on the viewer and the place.

There is another theme that runs throughout the work though: no matter how hard and difficult times may be, there is always hope, a way out, even victory and rebirth . . .
