Artist Statement and Resume

I create sculptures that are both figurative and abstract, moving easily between the two worlds; and I often use unconventional materials, whether recycled or new. It is important to me that the materials are tactile and that they have their own beauty.

My images are often inspired by an emotional response to a particular material. I see moments in time like a snapshot, and the feelings or emotional impressions that accompany them become the artworks. There is a secretiveness in wrapping, concealing and tangling as a visual language. The viewer may choose to untangle a meaning or not; because my real goal is to find grace in the materials, and to make an object which is beautiful.

The exhibit title, “Hurts” refers to the many injuries which every person experiences in life - emotional, physical, psychological, societal and political. Hurts are universal. Small or large, the effects remain with the individual in some manner throughout their lives. The “hurts” cause damage, but thy also teach and strengthen. Most importantly, they alter us in some way with each experience.
