Artist Statement and Resume

In my photographs, I use organic materials as metaphors related to the themes of growth, change and aging.  I attempt to capture the delicate and transient beauty of those organic materials as they transform through varying natural states of decay. My intention is to illustrate the end of a life cycle. To me, this stage of development reveals an enduring beauty which is nearly otherworldly. Some of the flowers release their pollen and seeds while they are being photographed, which may appear dynamic or life generating. Others disintegrate while I handle them, which transforms them into completely different shapes. Either way, the life cycle continues!

To accomplish this delicate feat, I use the scanner as my camera. This is a process that demands patience and a great deal of trial and error, especially since I look for a particular feeling and aesthetic for each image. To reveal a greater degree of abstraction, I often select only a part of the subject. In addition, I experiment with numerous arrangements to explore multiple points of view. Finally, I use Photoshop to make minor adjustments in contrast, color and composition. The finished photographs are printed on archival rag paper with an Epson printer using lightfast inks.

I explore my subjects to emphasize their larger-than-life personalities and to reveal their mysterious inner spaces. I use the photographic medium to capture the play of light across their delicate surfaces. The resulting image represents the constantly changing shapes, colors and textures inherent in all organic matter.
