My work usually relates
to places of long acquaintance. When I am outdoors I like to look
closely and listen for the spirit of the place. I do not paint
on site in an attempt to capture the shifting nuance of light or
weather.
The paintings come
later, in the studio, when my memory filters the event and my focus
shifts from pictorial accuracy as I engage the visual and aesthetic
demands of the painting. The original experience of light and space
then melds with the instinct, intellect and process which inform the
act of painting.
Working on a a painting
becomes an exercise in duality with the mind in two places at once.
In this show, each painting presents a site that has played a
recurring role in my work of the past ten years of more. These are
places that have captured my attention. I try to interpret their
physical presence and to create a distillation of experience.
All the paintings have been
completed in the current year. Collectively they provide a summation
of my work in this series.
