My love of creating with clay is fueled by its unique ability to convey a sense of movement, growth, and animation. The plasticity allows me to bring forth organic forms that are not possible in other mediums. I find idealization to be static. I avoid it, preferring instead the energy found in asymmetry. Clay, hand, and mind inform each other as my works reach their final form. My works are not pre-designed: each piece evolves  individually, worked by hand. I do not make multiples, not even in bronze.

My involvement with columns grew into an interest in the spire, which I see as a yearning form. The spire then progressed into exploration of the spiral, a form that has the ability to express movement, intent, and time: past, present and future simultaneously. The vertical spire has now moved into exploration of the coil, a form with a horizontal dynamic and is thus more temporal and sensual.

Irezumi, or Japanese body tattoo, inspired many of the surfaces on the new horizontal pieces. The surface work is really drawing and color, rather than painting. There is a wonderful dichotomy in my intent to explore Irezumi. While I am drawing on and caressing each form, I am at the same time obscuring its surface. A flat, even light will display the drawn and colored surface, while strong directional light punctuates the form.

The floor standing pieces, properly installed, are durable and suitable for permanent landscape installation. More of these pieces can be viewed at Mudwasp Sculpture Site in Cuba, New Mexico just 2/10ths of a mile off New Mexico SR 550.
