I have always been
a little obsessive about including a wide variety of painting styles
in my work. Splashes, drips, pooled paint, and controlled brushwork—
combined with fabric, photo copies, found paper—combined with
cartoon imagery, painted text, realistic figures—combined with
design elements such as stripes, geometric forms, and polka dots
(always polka dots) have all had their place in my compositions,
often at the same time.
My interest in the silhouette and
the intrigue it evokes can probably be traced back to my first year
in grade school, when the teacher spotlighted my head with a bare
bulb and traced the resulting shadow onto a piece of paper taped to
the wall. I was then assigned to paint it black and gave it to my
mother as a gift. I think she liked it.
Oddly, I still use basically the
same approach by projecting my selected imagery on to the wall and
then turning it into a silhouette, or diagram, or a very large piece
of clip art. This image is placed on a ground made up of the drips,
smudges and paint rings. The results are hard edged images combined
with the free form ooze of liquid paint, making the frozen
silhouettes vibrant and energized. To me this is how we as humans make
our way through the world, trying to distinguish ourselves, and at
the same time attempting to blend with the crowd. I hope my
paintings reflect that in some way. Inevitably the process is not
seamless and the process will show through the cracks, no matter how
devoted we are to covering them up. But, a few polka dots can’t
hurt.
